Is Notching My LVL Beam Under a Sloping Roof Okay?

I'm currently renovating my house and I've removed a load-bearing wall. An engineer advised me to use two 12x2 LVLs that are 18 feet long. However, I noticed that my contractor notched the first beam to fit under the sloping roof. Is this acceptable? He plans to add two more 2x4s for support. I've included a photo for reference.

Your contractor really should stick to the engineer's plans. Any deviations can potentially cause issues down the line, so it's important to keep everything aligned with the drawings.

Notching like that might not be a big deal as long as the beam maintains over 50% of its depth at the support point. Just make sure your engineer gives a thumbs-up on the design to ensure everything's safe and sound!

Exactly! If the notch isn't in the original drawings, definitely ask your engineer to update them. They may simply need to tweak a few details.

It's definitely a good idea to consult with your engineer about the notching. They did the calculations for your project, so their input is crucial here.
