Last year in May/June, I had significant roof and framing repairs done, including replacing rafters, ridges, and adding beams. They even increased the pitch on an addition and added insulation before finishing things off with plywood for the roofers. After completing the project, I was handed a hefty bill just under $40,000, covering labor, lumber, hardware, and dumping fees. Now, several months later, they've contacted me for an additional $1,700 for insulation they forgot to invoice me for. Am I obligated to pay this unexpected charge, considering it feels like a mistake on their part so long after the fact? Any advice on how to approach this?

It sounds like a tricky situation! If the insulation was part of the original work and you agreed to time and materials, then technically you might be required to pay for it despite the delay. However, if it was never discussed as an additional charge, I'd say push back a bit! You could offer a smaller amount, like $500, since they dropped the ball on billing.
I would definitely recommend calling their billing department. It's possible you could negotiate the total amount down a bit because of their mistake. You might end up paying less than the full $1,700 if you emphasize the lack of prior communication.
If the work was done as per your original agreement, paying it might be the right thing to do, even if it feels late. Just make sure everything was documented in your contract before proceeding.

Sounds like a good plan. Just make sure they agree on the original scope of work. It's definitely not your fault they didn't keep track!
