I recently upgraded to the packout vacuum and added a debris separator after my old M18 vac broke down. I mainly work with wood and don't have issues with sawdust or wood chips, but I'm curious about how well the separator handles drywall sanding dust. I know no system is perfect, but would it be better to stick with my cyclone system for drywall, or can I expect decent performance from the separator?

It’s likely that the debris separator won’t catch all the drywall dust since it’s pretty lightweight. For drywall work, I’d recommend using vacuum bags instead; they’re generally more effective. You can cut the bag to empty it if needed and even use a ½ inch PVC slip to make it reusable. Plus, if you're handling wet materials, you’d need to remove the filter and switch back to a regular setup.
Can you share where to get those bags? I usually don’t deal with wet stuff, just want to make my vacuum last longer.
