Looking for Quick-Growing Trees for Shade and Privacy in Zone 9b

Hey everyone! I'm on the hunt for a couple of quick-growing trees I can plant in my backyard here in Zone 9b in California. Ideally, I'd like one tree that provides shade during the summer and another that can offer some privacy. I have a relatively small yard, so I'm looking for options that won't grow too large. Any recommendations?

You might want to check out Quercus berberidifolia and Prunus ilicifolia. These are native, smaller trees that grow well in your area. They support local ecosystems and won't need much watering once established!

That sounds great! But isn't it true that oaks tend to be slow growers? Can the scrub oak keep up?

Consider the River Birch. They are fast-growing and pretty interesting trees! Just keep in mind that their roots tend to be near the surface, which might complicate growing other plants beneath them. I’ve got five in my yard and love them!

That sounds nice, but I have pavers in my backyard. Not sure if surface roots would work well for me. I’ll definitely look into it, though!

If privacy is your main concern, Leyland Cypress could be a great choice. They grow pretty quickly and look beautiful, but you'll need to make sure there's enough space for them to spread out.
