We have a situation with our downstairs bathroom vent that's currently venting into the attic. My husband went up to redirect it to the soffit but found out the vent was installed incorrectly — it's too large for the space and was improperly fitted, which also involved cutting through a supporting brace in the attic. We need to fix this, and we're under pressure because new insulation is being added in the attic tomorrow right over this vent. What are our options? There's a window in the bathroom; can we use that for venting, and then just patch up the drywall? Or do we need to go for a shallower vent? Thanks in advance for any advice!

If you're looking for a temporary fix, you might consider just stubbing the vent duct into the attic for now, maybe even taping the end off. Then down the line, when you can, you could cut in a roof vent. That could work well!

Oh, that makes sense! We do have a gable in the attic, so I think running the duct there might be a viable option. Just wanted to clarify — the existing duct doesn’t fit properly because of that other brace that was cut. So I’m leaning towards relocating everything before the insulation goes in. Any thoughts on venting through the bathroom window instead?
