Can I Use OSB for an Outdoor Golf Hitting Platform?

I'm a total newbie when it comes to woodworking, but I'm looking to build a stable outdoor platform for hitting golf balls. I already have a net set up in my backyard and a range mat, but I want a flat surface to place the mat on. I have some 7/16 OSB available, and I'm wondering if it's suitable for outdoor use, particularly if it gets wet. I can store it in my garage during the winter, but ideally, I don't want to have to constantly move it in and out every time I practice. Most of the time, it would just be leaning against my fence in the yard. Would the OSB hold up outdoors?

You might want to think about using a horse stall mat or some flat stepping stones instead. They can provide a durable surface for your hitting mat without the issues of OSB deteriorating outdoors.

Honestly, OSB isn't really meant for outdoor use, especially if it's going to get wet. It could rot pretty quickly if exposed to moisture. I suggest considering either getting some vinyl wrap to protect it or looking into materials designed for outdoor use instead.

I wouldn't expect OSB to last very long outside. If you're set on this route for budget reasons, just be ready to replace it when it starts to degrade. I had a piece that I laid flat and it surprisingly held up for a few years before rotting, but I wouldn’t count on that! A good coat of paint can help it last a bit longer though. Maybe it’ll last you through a season, which isn’t a huge loss considering it's pretty cheap!

That's a good point! If it only lasts a season, it's not a big deal since OSB is so inexpensive. Just gotta be ready to swap it out.
