I'm building a dresser out of cherry and need some advice on what to use for the internal components like the drawer slides and sides. Poplar is often recommended, but I'm concerned it might be too soft for the dovetail joints I'm planning. Anyone have suggestions for a good secondary wood that's easy to find at a big box store?

Poplar has been a classic choice for drawer materials for ages. I've made plenty of dovetailed drawers with it without any problems, so I think it should work fine for you!
I usually go with maple too. If you're looking for something more budget-friendly though, pine is a good option, and it'll look nice with dovetails, even if you're not perfect at it.
Yeah, pine's a bit too rich for my budget right now! I scored the cherry for cheap, but I need to keep costs low. Thanks for the input!
You could consider either poplar or soft maple. Both would work well for the inside pieces of your dresser!
