How Can I Make MDF Waterproof for Use in Moist Areas?

I'm looking for the best ways to make MDF waterproof since I know there's moisture-resistant MDF available. Specifically, I'd like some tips for using it in areas with higher moisture levels, like kitchens and bathrooms, particularly as interior trim like baseboards, architraves, or shelving. Are there any specific techniques or products you recommend for ensuring it holds up against moisture?

Honestly, I'd steer clear of using MDF in bathrooms altogether. It has a tendency to swell and deteriorate if moisture seeps in. You might want to consider alternative materials like solid wood or specially treated boards that are made for high-humidity environments.

I’ve found that applying sanding sealer first and then a few coats of wipe-on poly works well. I used this approach on my garage worktop, and it seems to give enough protection for the occasional moisture. In my opinion, that should work fine as long as it's not in direct contact with water.

Using marine-grade polyurethane is a solid method to enhance MDF's moisture resistance. It can provide a decent barrier, but keep in mind, while it won't make MDF truly waterproof, it’ll help with dampness. Just make sure to follow up with a couple of good coats for best results.
