Choosing Between Redwood and Composite for My Fence – Need Advice!

Hey everyone! I'm in a bit of a bind and could really use your input on fence materials for my home. I'm having a long 6-foot fence put up around my front and some of my back yard. The contractor quoted me about $10K less for redwood compared to composite, but he mentioned that the redwood would require annual sanding and treating, which could run me around $3-3.5K each year. Given that I'll probably be in this house for just 5-7 years, it makes me think that going with composite might be a smarter choice now. I'm seeing a lot of mixed info online about how often redwood actually needs treatment and if it can last without frequent maintenance. Can anyone share their experiences? How often do you really have to take care of redwood? Any advice would be super helpful since I need to decide by the end of the day. Thanks!

Honestly, if you're going to move in a few years, you might want to think about cedar too. It's cheaper than redwood and can still look great! But if you love the look of redwood, keep in mind that it can last the 7 years without too much fuss because it's naturally rot-resistant. You could always handle the treatments yourself if you want to save some cash. Just a thought!

Yeah, redwood does have a nice vibe. It’s all about what you want to live with for a while!

Composite definitely has a longer lifespan than redwood. But redwood can hold up well, especially if you’re okay with a little maintenance here and there. You can stretch out the treatment schedule if you keep an eye on it. And hey, for some of us, nothing beats the natural look of wood!

True, that natural vibe is hard to compete with. But I think the upkeep concerns are legit, especially if you mind spending the extra cash later!
