I'm just starting out in woodworking, and I've got all the motivation but no tools. What are the essential tools I should have as a beginner? I want to make things like furniture and tables for fun!

It really depends on what you want to create, but for starters, I'd recommend a whetstone, a hand saw, a hand plane, a 3-piece chisel set, and a mallet. With those tools, you can pretty much do anything!
