What’s the Going Rate for a Gardener?

I'm curious about the costs associated with hiring a gardener. If you've hired one before, what are the rates you've encountered? Do you know what you would typically pay—be it hourly, a fixed daily rate, or a flat fee? Also, for any gardeners here, what do you usually charge for your services? I'm trying to gather a variety of experiences and insights beyond just the DIY approach to gardening.

I pay around £70 for a four-hour block every two weeks, so that averages out to about £17.50 an hour. The gardener I work with is great—she handles everything except the grass and has a wealth of knowledge. It makes a huge difference since my garden needs a lot of attention, and I’m too busy with work to manage everything myself.

Pricing can really depend on the job specifics. For example, basic mowing might start at around £30, while more detailed work like hedge trimming could be upwards of £120, not counting waste removal. It's important to find someone who is insured and understands the work—experience really does make a difference in the results!

From my perspective, the national living wage is £12.21, which is a good starting point, but then you have to think about overhead costs. Gardeners often deal with tools, travel expenses, and insurance, so that bumps up the price. At the end of the day, it’s about value and expertise too. I know some people absolutely love the job, but it definitely requires a passion for it.
