What can I do about my washing machine’s sudden bad odor?

I've got a Whirlpool top loader HE washing machine that just started smelling really bad, like damp, mildewed towels. This is surprising because I've had it for three years and it's never had a smell before. I even tried running a vinegar and baking soda wash, but that didn't help. I'm wondering if I should call a plumber next or if there's something else I can do?

Have you tried keeping the lid open between washes? That can really help with airflow and reduce musty smells. Just an easy thing to check!

Just a heads up, mixing vinegar and baking soda isn't the best route since they neutralize each other. I suggest using just vinegar for buildup or maybe bleach for mildew, but go easy on it! Also, those Affresh cleaning tablets are a great option if you want something simple, and make sure to run a couple of clean cycles afterwards while leaving the door open!

That's interesting! I once had a washer that started smelling because a pillowcase got trapped under the agitator. It’s not visible, but it can definitely cause odors. You might want to check for anything stuck in there.

Good call! It’s easy to miss things like that, but they can definitely cause issues. Checking the wash drum for hidden items could be a smart move!
