I just got a brand new M18 compact router, and I'm having a major issue with the collet—it's way too tight. I can't get any 1/4-inch bits in or out. I tried to stretch the collet a bit, but that didn't help at all. After finally getting a bit in, I made sure it was about 1/4 inch proud, but it got stuck before I could even tighten the nut. I haven't even turned it on yet because I'm afraid it'll jam before I can loosen it. Am I doing something wrong, or did I get a defective router?

It sounds like your collet might have been machined too tight. Check for any raised edges either on the outside of the chuck or inside the collet itself. Sometimes those surfaces can mess things up. You should have three points of contact between the bit and collet, so if any of them are off, it could be causing the jam. Also, try different bits just to be sure it’s not a compatibility issue with those you have on hand.

I checked and everything feels super smooth. I thought maybe my bits were the issue, but I tried a couple and had the same problem. I guess I’ll have to test another brand soon.
