Is a Nested Workbench System Feasible?

I'm exploring the idea of creating a nested workbench system where a smaller work surface can be stored beneath the main bench. The plan is to have this smaller surface slide out on ball-bearing mechanisms, and when it's fully extended, some kind of compression springs or gas struts would lift it to be perfectly level with the main surface. This design aims to save space while providing additional work area only when I need it. Does anyone think this is doable?

I have my doubts about using struts for this type of mechanism. Instead, I’d suggest considering a lever system. You could raise the smaller work surface, and it would settle down a bit to rest firmly—that way, it has a more straightforward mechanical design.

Do you have any examples of this kind of lever system in action? I’d love to see it!
