How Should I Price Edging and Mulching Services?

Hey everyone! I'm looking for advice on pricing for two landscaping services I'm offering. First, how much should I charge to redefine a garden edge? This is just basic edging to make a clean, sharp line between the grass and the garden. Should I charge by the hour or by the footage?

Second, what's a fair rate for laying mulch? The homeowner is providing the mulch, so I just need to know how to price my work. Is it better to charge hourly, by square footage, or by the number of yards laid? Thanks in advance for your help!

In my experience, I charge around $150 per yard, which includes delivery and laying the mulch. It’s about $35 more for dyed mulch in my area. This season, I plan to increase that to around $160-$170. For edging, I stick to about $1 per linear foot, which seems to work well!

That sounds good! What do you usually factor in for labor costs when you're laying down the mulch?

When it comes to pricing, it really depends on a couple of factors like the amount of mulch you'll be using and the total length of the edging. Personally, I recommend charging hourly rather than by square foot, just to keep things simple. For the mulching, you might want to think about separating your pricing for the edging and the mulching, too. That way, it's more transparent for your clients!

If we’re talking approximately 8 yards of mulch and about 300 feet of edging, I think charging a flat rate per yard for the mulch laid is pretty reasonable. That way, you have a clear figure for your clients.
