I've got an old three-season porch that the previous owners converted into living space. The back door leading to the deck is level with the decking, causing moisture and snow to splash onto it all the time. To protect it better, I want to add a storm door, but I've found out that my current door is only 78 inches tall, and getting a custom storm door would cost me a fortune. I'm thinking about replacing the whole door to get a full-light option and change the door swing as well. If I go ahead with this plan, can I notch the header to accommodate an 80-inch door? Since it's a non-load-bearing wall, would notching the header create any problems down the road?

If you're open to replacing your door, consider that many stores like Lowes and Home Depot offer 78-inch storm doors at competitive prices, sometimes even on sale. Just keep an eye out for what you want online and see if you can ship to your nearest store.

Yeah, but they don’t have the retractable Anderson one I’m after.
