Is It Safe to Use MDF in a Bathroom?

I've come across a lot of mixed advice regarding the use of MDF in bathrooms. Some folks say that moisture-resistant MDF can work well if it's sealed properly, while others argue that it just won't last in humid conditions, no matter how careful you are. I'm thinking about using it for a vanity and some trim in a small bathroom that has decent ventilation. Has anyone tried MDF in situations like this? How did it hold up over time? Thanks for any insights!

If you can keep it well-ventilated and avoid direct moisture, MDF could work. Just be mindful about it touching the floor and make sure it’s not exposed to humidity constantly. I'm not a huge fan personally, but some people swear by using it for painted cabinetry.

I think using PVC trim for wet areas is a better move than MDF. MDF might seem okay, but I'd suggest playing it safe with something more moisture-resistant, especially around sinks or showers.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll definitely consider PVC for the areas near water.

Yeah, I've heard good things about PVC for wet environments. It's a solid choice!

Honestly, I wouldn't use MDF for anything that might get wet. When it chips or scratches, water gets in and it just disintegrates. I think it's okay for trim work far away from water sources, but definitely not for direct contact. I've used it for trim in a high-moisture situation, and as long as it’s well-sealed and not by the shower, it was fine for me.

Yeah, I agree! I've had MDF trim in my bathroom too, and it held up really well over the years, but I made sure it was sealed and kept away from sitting water.

MDF's fine for trim if you plan correctly but it's risky for vanities. I'd choose something else for those.
