Help! My Sliding Door Doesn’t Fit—What Can I Do About the Gap?

I recently had a contractor install a sliding door, but it's way too small for the closet opening by about 2 to 2.5 inches. To make matters worse, the wall isn't straight, leaving a bigger gap at the top than at the bottom. It looks pretty bad, and I'm not sure how to tackle this issue. Any suggestions?

I'd also ask who measured and ordered the door in the first place. If the opening can be resized or a new door can be ordered that fits better, that’s ideal. If the structure of the house is wonky, dealing with that can be costlier, but it's worth addressing the root cause instead of just covering up the gaps.

Honestly, if you're looking for a quick fix, you could just add trim molding to cover the gaps. Find some that matches your base molding and run it from the baseboard up to the ceiling on one side, and let it sit flush against the wall on the other. A little caulking and a fresh coat of paint can help it look more intentional, too! It won't be perfect, but it can be a decent workaround.

The first thing you might want to do is take the door out, fix the opening to make it the right size, and then reinstall the door properly. That way, you'll have a clean fit without any gaps. It might be more hassle now, but it could save you from future headaches!

Yeah, but be careful if you're not experienced with repairs. You may need to hire a pro to ensure it’s done right!
