Tips for Getting Ready for Your First House Cleaner

I'm hiring a cleaner for the first time to tidy up my house just for a one-time session. I have dogs and a toddler, and I'm unsure how much I need to clear out beforehand. What can I do to make things easier for the cleaner? Any advice for a newbie like me?

Great idea to ask the cleaner directly! Typically, they clean around items left out. Like if dishes are in the sink, they might just wipe around them unless that was agreed upon beforehand. Same goes for laundry and surfaces with appliances. To maximize their work, try to clear surfaces as much as you can. And don't forget to think about your pets—will they be put away during cleaning? It’s worth discussing this with the cleaner.

I plan to take the dogs to my mom's that day! I’ll mostly be out with my toddler, but I might bring him home for naptime.

It really depends on how much time you want to pay for! If you’re only booking a couple of hours, the cleaner will probably clean around the clutter rather than deep clean everything. You can make their job easier by handling the laundry and dishes beforehand, and maybe just pile the clutter on your bed for now. If your place is very cluttered, you might want to think about hiring an organizer for a day or two to help sort things out. It's a good investment to save time and get the most out of your cleaner's visit!

I didn’t realize some cleaners can help with laundry and dishes! That’s really a surprise, and I’m fine skipping that now.
