What’s This Square Hole in My Basement Floor and Should I Fill It In?

Hey everyone, I found this square hole in my basement floor that's measuring about 16"x14" and is 4" deep. It has a couple of small plumbing fixtures in it. We're located in Ontario. The previous owner had covered it with wood, but we had to remove that because it got rotten and moldy. Now we're unsure whether we should simply cover it up again or go for filling it with something like sand or concrete. Any advice?

Could it be a rough-in for a shower or toilet? Sometimes people would put that kind of setup there in case they wanted to install fixtures in the future. If that's the case, maybe just leave it as is for now till you decide on renovations!

I think you should hold onto the hole for now; you might need it someday if you run into flooding issues. It’s good to have a sump pit or some way to manage water if it becomes a problem later on. Just make sure it’s sealed properly if you choose to cover it!

Totally agree! Better to have a solution in place than to deal with water damage later. Make sure to check for any drainage systems too.

That hole could possibly be a sump pit. I had one in my basement that was permanently dry and never had any water issues. I decided to close it up when I finished my basement renovations, and it hasn't caused any problems since. Just make sure you know what those plumbing fixtures are for before you decide to cover it up!

Yeah, definitely check those fixtures out. If they're not in use, covering might be okay, but if there’s a chance they’re for drainage, keep it accessible.
