What’s the Best Metal for Carving Knives?

Hey everyone! I'm diving into the world of wood carving and I'm curious about which metals are best for carving knives. I've come across suggestions for stainless steel, carbon steel, and molybdenum-vanadium steel, but there seems to be a lot of conflicting info out there. Could anyone give me some guidance or recommendations on these options or perhaps offer insights into other metals? Also, if you have any recommended stores in the UK or that deliver there, that would be super helpful! Thanks a bunch!

In the UK, you’re in luck! The Spoon Crank has a wide selection of carving tools, plus Orford tools are top-notch. Also check out Gary Hackett as they have some great options for beginners. It'll be perfect for you!

I prefer high carbon steel for carving. If you're into making your own tools, old car leaf springs are awesome for that! They provide great durability and sharpness. Just a thought, though, if you're not ready to forge your own tools yet, high carbon steel is still a fantastic choice for pre-made knives!

I'm not quite ready to forge my tools yet, just getting started here, but thanks for the tip about high carbon steel!

Are you planning to make your own knives or buy them? If it's the latter, focus more on the brand than the steel type. Many reputable carving brands are a bit vague about the type of steel they use anyway. Stainless and carbon steels are often mentioned, but they are just families of steel. For carving, carbon steel usually offers better edge retention. Stick to trusted brands like Flexcut or Stryi, and you'll be good to go!

Thanks for the detailed breakdown! I'm definitely looking to buy rather than make my own knives right now.

When it comes to carving knives, the heat treatment and quality of fabrication are probably more important than the specific type of steel used. But generally, carbon steel is popular due to its hardening capabilities, while tool steel is noted for its durability. Whatever you choose, just make sure it’s a hard steel with good wear resistance!

Got it! Thanks for the insight!
