Eco-Friendly Finishing Options for Wood Carvings?

Asked By CarvedInTime67 On

Hey everyone! I'm searching for some eco-friendly methods to color or finish my wood carvings. I'm trying to steer clear of acrylics since they're plastic, and I'm curious if anyone shares this concern and can recommend some sustainable products or techniques. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, shellac is a solid choice; it’s made from bugs and alcohol, so it’s quite natural! Plus, it's a great finish that gives a nice shine to wood. Just be aware that it may not be fully vegan if that’s a concern for you.

Don’t forget about Biopoly! It's made from leftovers of cashew processing, which makes it a very sustainable option for wood finishes. You might find it works well for your projects too!

You might want to try milk paint or plant-based dyes! Stuff like walnut hull, beetroot, onion peels, turmeric, tea, and coffee can create some fun colors. For finishing, natural oils like pure linseed (just make sure it’s not the boiled kind) or tung oil, as well as beeswax and shellac, are all good options. Just look for brands that ethically source their materials and are local if possible.
