Hey everyone! I've got a few pieces of ebony, each measuring 2" x 2" x 10", and I'm curious about what it's like to carve with this wood. I've heard it can be challenging, so I'd love to hear about your experiences and any tips you might have.

If you’re even a little impatient, I’d say avoid it. It requires a lot of detail work, and without top-quality chisels and knives, you'll end up spending more time sharpening than actually carving. I remember doing some lathe work on a bagpipe chanter once, and only my carbide-edged tools could handle it well. Regular high-speed steel tools dull too fast to be useful.
Ebony is really tough to carve! You have to take it super slowly and be careful with how you see the grain since it can be tricky. Just remember, it's all about making small shavings at a time, but once you get the hang of it, it can be quite enjoyable to work with!
Thank you and that's okay I knew it would take patience.
I haven't carved ebony myself, but I've admired some beautiful pieces made from it. Just so you know, its Janka hardness rating is around 3080, which is way tougher than basswood (only 410). You’ll need really good tools, either high-end hand tools or a rotary carver with quality burrs. Oh, and patience is key!
I only work on stuff like this when my patience level is high. Thank you.

Thank you, I had intended to do this at times when I am long on patience, and I appreciate the feedback.
