Hey everybody! I'm trying to decide between a wooden shoulder plane with a brass sole and a steel one, specifically torn between the 1/2" Heartwood shoulder plane and the Lie Nielsen small shoulder plane. Can anyone share their thoughts on the pros and cons of each? I'm especially curious about any real differences, considering the soul of the Heartwood plane is metal as well. Thanks!

Wooden planes can often be made by hand for a more personal touch and are typically less expensive. However, they do have their quirks, such as susceptibility to moisture changes. If you enjoy crafting tools yourself, this could be a fun project!
Honestly, it all comes down to personal preference! Wooden planes have a unique feel and can work wonders, but they might not be as precise as metal ones. My go-to is an all-metal setup, as they tend to stay square and are reliable for cleaning up joints. Just find the one that feels right for you!

That makes sense! If I’m considering a wooden plane, I would probably need to check it for adjustments before using it.
