Hey everyone! My wife and I are about to buy a house with a smaller yard of about 0.4 acres. I'm wondering if 150 square feet would be a good size for my workshop. I have a decent amount of woodworking tools, like a table saw, band saw, several sanding machines, and both power and hand tools. They all fit comfortably in my two-car garage right now, with lots of space left over. Would love to hear any suggestions or ideas from you all on this! Thanks!

I currently have a backyard shop of about 725 square feet, and while smaller spaces can work fine, I definitely think bigger is better for larger projects. Ideally, I’d recommend at least 400 square feet so you can comfortably maneuver around your tools, especially for assembly and finishing. Consider how you’ll store and work on bigger pieces—space really makes a difference!
Yeah! I had to reorganize my shop just to fit a vehicle in there for winter. It can get tricky!
Honestly, 150 square feet is quite small for a workshop. In my experience, once I get into any decent-sized project, I find myself overflowing into other spaces. You need enough room not just for tools but also for movement and storage of materials. I'd say at least 400 square feet would feel much more comfortable if you're planning to do serious woodworking.
That makes a lot of sense! I have a compact setup now and I often find myself moving things around just to make space.
Thanks for sharing your experience! It’s helpful to know what works for others.
If you can, go as big as possible! Tools and materials tend to take up more space than you think. Even if your budget is tight now, maybe plan for an expansion later. You might want to start small with a setup that can grow by using roller shutters and adding more space when you can. Just keep in mind that bigger spaces allow you to work on larger projects much easier!
Totally agree! I'm limited on space too, and it gets tight. Always wish for a bit more room.

400 square feet sounds like a solid recommendation! I'll definitely keep that in mind.
