Is It Worth Removing Old Concrete for Grass?

I've started taking out a little concrete path from the side of my house, and I've noticed that the grass in my front garden isn't thriving either. I discovered that the previous owners packed some old bricks and blocks under the concrete and just laid grass on top. What's the best way to tackle this? I'm concerned about the costs involved in removing all the debris and refilling the area with soil to properly lay grass down.

One option is to strip the grass away and then cover the bricks and blocks with a mix of gravel, sand, and topsoil before planting. That could be simpler than completely removing everything, depending on your goals.

Considering the thin soil from the bricks, you might want to plant native wildflowers or low-growing plants like thyme or clover instead of traditional grass. They can thrive better in less than ideal soil!

We did something similar recently! We removed a bunch of stones and paving for grass and absolutely love the change. It gives you room for flowers too if you want borders. Honestly, green just feels calming and nice.

I've been through something similar. I found tons of junk buried under my lawn. I ended up digging everything out and filled it with soil for a proper lawn. Just be aware of your actual soil quality! It might be sandy and rocky, which can affect how well grass grows.

You could also just add at least six inches of topsoil and then reseed the area. That might be a quick fix!
