I'm not very experienced with woodworking, but my mother-in-law wants to drill through some 4x4 landscaping boards. The problem is, she bought a masonry bit and insists on using that instead of the right bit. I'm worried that the boards might crack when she drills into them. Any thoughts?

Honestly, I’d let her try it out and just watch! It’ll probably turn into a funny show. If I were you, I’d offer her a hammer drill and have a bit of fun while she figures it out.
It's possible that it won't crack, but the hole will end up way bigger than she wants because masonry bits aren’t sharp; they just pound away at the material. Plus, drilling through wood like that could really heat up and cause some smoke. Maybe it'll be a memorable DIY project!
Oh, she's definitely going to end up with a messy hole, and who knows, maybe even some smoke! Masonry bits aren't designed for wood, so they'll struggle to get through and might just burn it instead. Just keep an eye on her, could be an entertaining mess!
