Help! Oriental Bittersweet is Taking Over My Yard!

I've been dealing with a major issue on my property—Oriental bittersweet is spreading everywhere, and it's really overwhelming. We have about three acres, and after accidentally cutting down a massive mother vine when we moved in three and a half years ago, it seems to have gone wild. It's sprouting up all over the place! I've had some health issues lately, which has made it even tougher to keep up with it all. Just walking around my backyard gives me so much anxiety because it feels hopeless. I would really appreciate any advice or solutions you might have. Thanks a lot!

I totally get how tough it is to manage this invasive plant. You're not alone! There’s a great guide on managing Oriental bittersweet that includes timing for herbicide applications. Check it out here: [https://extension.psu.edu/oriental-bittersweet](https://extension.psu.edu/oriental-bittersweet). It might help you create a game plan. Good luck!

Thanks so much! I appreciate the info. I’m definitely considering using herbicides, but I'm really concerned about affecting the local wildlife. It seems like I’d need to cover the entire three acres to make a dent, especially since the root system is extensive.

The best approach is to cut it down to the ground and use Triclopyr on any new growth you see in the fall. You might not be able to get out all the roots, but that’s okay—just keep at it! Also, getting an arborist to spray could help prevent any new plants from popping up. It's going to take some support, though!

How do you even find the root system? I’m worried that the big tree I cut down years ago is still feeding all the sprouts because I still see tons cropping up, but they look more like weeds now.
