What’s the average cost for replacing gravel with topsoil in a garden?

Hey everyone! I'm planning to replace about 220 sqft of gravel in my garden with topsoil. I received a quote of £1000 for the project. I'm curious about how much this usually costs if you've done it yourself or hired someone. Specifically, I'd love to know the total costs involved in removing the gravel, disposing of it, and spreading the new topsoil. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I've done this twice! For removing gravel, I'd say my costs came to about £220 for a skip (which I used for other projects too) plus around £75 for quality topsoil plus a £10 delivery fee. Each time, it took a couple of hours and was quite satisfying to see the end result! Definitely a DIY job, but if you're not up for it, hiring help might save you some back pain.

Yeah, I went with the smallest skip for £220 too, and that held about 25 wheelbarrows of gravel with room to spare!

Instead of paying for disposal, you could try giving the gravel away for free on platforms like Freecycle or Facebook Marketplace. Just advertise it as first-come, first-served, and ask people to bring their own bags. You might find someone willing to take it off your hands!

I recently tackled a similar project in my front garden where we removed gravel from about 8 square meters. The gravel disposal took forever and we ended up making a couple trips to the dump, ruining a pair of nice garden gloves in the process! If you can afford it, paying someone might be the way to go to avoid that hassle.
