I've been getting into woodworking and have a few projects lined up, but I don't have room for larger tools like a planer or table saw. I found a Bedrock plane on Craigslist for $200, but I've also heard good things about the new WoodRiver #5 available at a nearby store, which is a bit pricier. I'm trying to decide between the two. Which one would you recommend?

If you’re new to planes, I’d suggest the WoodRiver or even a non-Bedrock Stanley Bailey for less than $200. Bedrocks are great, but they might need some tuning to get them right, which can be tricky for beginners. The WoodRiver is generally easier to set up and will save you some headaches.
I’ve heard that WoodRiver's pricing is a bit inflated. I have a Dictum n°5, which is similar, and while it's worked well for me, I did have to do some work on it. If the Bedrock is in good condition, that might be the better deal. Just choose the cheaper option!
Go for the Bedrock! It's got a rich history and is often passed down through generations, which gives it a charm that new tools lack. If that's important to you, it’s definitely worth considering.
I'd lean towards the WoodRiver. It’s built like a Bedrock but newer. I’ve got a 5 1/2 and I love it!
For a #5, a vintage Bailey does the trick for me. I suggest saving for a premium plane like a #4 when you're ready to invest more; they make a big difference without being too cumbersome.
