I'm planning to build a picnic table using a metal kit I found for about $60. I have a couple of wood options in mind: green treated 2x6 boards (and possibly 2x10s) and cedar 2x6 boards. I'm looking for advice on which wood would be the best choice, especially for durability and aesthetics in the long run. I'd also love recommendations on finishes—should I stain or add a polyurethane coating? I need this table to withstand Iowa's unpredictable weather all year round. Any tips would be really helpful!

Honestly, I'd skip the pressure-treated wood—not so much for health reasons (the chemicals are safe now), but because it's pretty low-quality lumber. Go for cedar! It looks great and if you treat it with the right oils, it can last a long time. Just remember, any wood you use needs to dry well before sealing it, especially if you're in an area with a lot of moisture.
For the best finish, I would recommend going with a penetrating oil finish like Sikkens instead of polyurethane. I had a bad experience keeping up with a polyurethane finish on a porch swing for over 20 years; it just becomes a hassle. The oil finish is way easier to maintain—just reapply every few years!
If you decide on cedar or redwood, make sure to finish it! A simple deck sealer is a great option to protect it from the elements. But be prepared for maintenance; you'll have to replace the finishes every so often. For a more long-lasting option, consider a clear sealant or teak oil to keep it looking nice through seasonal changes.
Thanks for the deck sealer tip! I was leaning toward that too.

I'll definitely check out that oil finish! Sounds like a smarter option.
