What are some good alternatives to 3M sanding blocks?

I'm really struggling with these 3M sanding blocks on my current project. While they feel nice, switching between grits is frustrating, and I often don't get the sandpaper secured properly. Plus, they waste sandpaper because of how it wraps. I'm hoping to find a better solution that doesn't involve just buying a bunch more blocks. I'd prefer something minimalist and love using hand tools. Any suggestions?

You should try sanding sponges. They don’t require you to change anything, and they work really well without all the fuss.

I tried using sponges on my dining table refinishing project, and they were a lifesaver! Really made it a lot easier.

You might want to give cabinet scrapers a shot. They're a total game changer and can save you a lot of hassle when sanding.

I've been using wooden blocks where I staple sandpaper around them. If you can find some skirting board scraps, they give you a nice shape too – a flat side and a rounded edge!
