Is My Riving Knife Too Thin for My Table Saw Blade?

Asked By CraftyNinja93 On

Hey folks! I recently got myself a new table saw (Skil ts6307-00) along with a Freud LM72M010 rip blade. Upon checking, I noticed that my blade plate measures .087 while the riving knife is only .071. Is there a standard way to handle this situation? Would wrapping painter's tape around the riving knife help, or should I consider getting a thicker one? Thanks for any advice!

It's actually pretty common for riving knives to be thinner than the blade, so you shouldn't worry too much. Leaving it as-is is usually the best route. A thinner knife helps keep the wood from pinching down on the blade, making it easier to push through the cut.

Yeah, the difference in thickness shouldn't really impact your work. The riving knife is there to prevent the wood from closing up after it's cut, so it definitely needs to be thinner than the blade. If you really want them to match up, using painter's tape won't hurt, but it's not necessary. Just dive into your woodworking projects!

Thanks for clarifying! I guess I won't overthink it then!
