I recently moved into a house with a lovely back deck overlooking a pool, but during the summer, it gets way too hot to enjoy because there's no shade. I want to plant some ornamental shade trees to help cool things down. The issue is that my neighbor, who is up the hill, made it very clear from day one that he doesn't want any planting in this area as it might block his view. He seems like someone who could retaliate if I go against his wishes, and although I haven't planted anything yet, I'm really torn. On one hand, I'd like to be considerate, but on the other, I want to make my backyard comfortable and private. What are your thoughts?

At the end of the day, it's about your comfort. If your neighbor wants to keep his view, well, he should’ve thought about that before buying his house. If they really want the view, they should buy *your* property! Just do what makes you happy with your garden, as long as it respects property lines and local rules.
Right? It’s your property and your decision. You're not blocking their view; you're just enhancing your own space!
Check your local laws first; sometimes there are Rights of Light laws that might apply. But if there’s nothing standing in your way legally, it’s your place to do as you please. Just keep a record of any pushback from your neighbor in case it escalates. This is about creating your little haven!
Honestly, your neighbor can't dictate what you plant on your own property. As long as whatever you plant doesn't overhang onto his side, go for it! You're well within your rights to plant trees for shade.

Exactly! If the neighbor gets moody, just stay cool. You could even bake them cookies or something to keep the peace!
