How to Fix a Wall Hole for a New Socket?

I had a telecom engineer swap out my phone/Internet socket, but the new one is smaller than the old one. Now, there's a half-inch gap in the wall where the socket should be, and it eventually just fell off. I'm looking for a way to fill or shrink the hole so I can reattach the socket. My initial thought was to put a thin board over the hole with a smaller hole cut out and paint over it, but I'd prefer a more polished look where the socket is flush with the wall. Any suggestions?

Another route to consider is using spray foam to fill the gap first, then using quick-setting drywall mud to smooth everything out. If you want a perfect finish, you might need some fiber tape and texture spray to match your wall. Finally, a paint job will help blend it all nicely.

You could definitely go for a cleaner approach! I recommend installing a junction box that can fit the new socket properly. It’ll make it more stable and give you a solid mount. Just make sure to decide based on what type of wall you have—whether it's drywall, plaster, or something else. If you’re unsure, feel free to share some pics to get more tailored advice!
