Should I DIY an MFT Workbench or Hire a CNC Shop?

I'm relocating and need to build a new workbench, ideally with an MFT-style top. I reached out to a local CNC shop, and they quoted me $200 to cut a 4x8 sheet of HDF for the top, which includes boring the holes and adding a chamfer. Alternatively, I could buy the UJK Parf guide for $250 to build my own table. The downside is I can't fit a full sheet in my car, so I've always had the store cut it down to 5x3. The CNC option seems convenient, but I really like the idea of experimenting at home without extra machine costs each time. If you've purchased the UJK Parf guide, what was your experience? Or should I consider a template from Etsy instead?

I own the UJK Parf guide, and let me tell you, it's fantastic! If I had to choose again, I'd definitely go for it. It allows for great flexibility for future projects. Plus, if you enjoy hands-on work, it can be a fun day of crafting your table instead of just waiting for a CNC to do it for you.

I’ve been thinking about this too! Personally, I don't need a full 4x8 surface. After considering my space, I found that a 40"x72" size works best for me—large enough for plywood yet manageable for storage. The UJK Parf guide is high quality, but if you're looking for cheaper options, Tamar from 3x3 Customs has a nice template for only $35! Plus, there's a small 3D-printed version from Jean-Marie Astruc on YouTube, though it's super basic.

Exactly! I was thinking the same about the size. The 3x3 template sounds like a steal! Just make sure you have some guide bushings on hand; you'll definitely need them!

Going with the CNC shop is a solid choice if you're looking for precision without the hassle. You'll get a perfect, ready-to-use surface without all the legwork. But keep in mind, you won't learn any new skills, and that might be a drawback if you want to make more guides or table tops in the future. If you're fine with spending less effort, this is a no-brainer!
