How Can I Fix My Stanley No. 5’s Lateral Adjustment Issue?

I've run into a problem with the lateral adjuster on my Stanley No. 5, Type 13. It used to have a slight amount of play, but now it just won't hold its position at all. After one pass, the adjuster falls completely to the right, messing up the blade's angle. It feels super loose when I try to reset it. I've never dropped it, and the only recent change is that I wiped it down with jojoba oil using my usual method, which has never caused issues before. I even tried tapping the adjuster connection point with a nail set, but that only worked temporarily. Does anyone know what might have caused this and how I can fix it? I hate to see such an old plane falling apart on me!

It might not be the lateral adjuster itself; check if the lever cap is tensioned properly. You need a good "click" when you put it back, but avoid overtightening it. Also, make sure the lever cap has the steel spring plate; if that’s gone or weak, it could cause problems.

That was definitely the issue. Thanks for your help! I appreciate you not judging my rookie mistake!

It sounds like the blade is sliding too easily against the frog. Maybe there’s too much oil on them? Tightening the lever cap screw can increase the friction and help keep everything steady. Just don't go too tight or you won't be able to adjust it!

I totally agree! I always try to feel the lateral lever when tightening the screw to make sure it's just right. You want enough resistance that it holds, but not so much that it’s impossible to adjust.

Thanks for the advice! I wiped off the excess oil and adjusted the screw, and it’s like new now!
