I recently got a DeWalt 733 planer to process some timber that I salvaged from shipping pallets. Before I start planning, I need to check each plank for buried nails to avoid damaging my planer blades. A friend suggested using a handheld metal detector for this purpose. Is it possible to use a stud finder instead? Would it work as effectively?

Unfortunately, a stud finder isn't going to cut it. You really need a handheld metal detector for this kind of job. I've got one that I always keep handy with my woodworking tools, and it's definitely worth the investment for salvaged wood.
Some stud finders have a mode for detecting metal, but I've found them to be pretty inconsistent. They either beep for every stud nearby or miss the mark entirely. Using one on solid wood could drive you nuts with false alarms, so I'd recommend sticking with a real metal detector for peace of mind.
Honestly, I’ve tried a bunch of stud finders and they always seem unreliable for this purpose. You could give it a shot, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for great results. A real metal detector is a safer bet if you don’t want to mess up your blades.
Thanks for all the feedback! Does anyone have recommendations for a reliable metal detector?

I got this one after watching a few reviews from a guy who recycles pallets, and it works really well! Check it out: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074GP3QBD.
