I'm struggling with my yard's soil, which is extremely hydrophobic and sandy. No matter how much I water, the water just sits on top instead of soaking in, making planting really difficult. I've tried adding compost and manure which helps a bit for my garden beds, but the whole yard is in the same boat. I'm looking for suggestions on how to improve the soil overall!

It sounds like your soil might be compacted clay that's causing issues with drainage. I definitely recommend getting a soil sample tested through your local ag extension service. It’s useful to dig a test hole to see how deep the compaction goes. When it comes to improving your soil, adding a lot of organic matter is key! A broadfork can help open it up if you want a physical method, but if you till, do it sparingly. Mixing in shredded pine bark could be beneficial too since it retains moisture while loosening up the soil!

Thanks a lot for the insight!
