What flowers should I plant at my cat’s grave that attract butterflies and bees?

I recently lost my beloved cat and would like to plant some flowers at his grave. He always loved butterflies and bees, so I think it would be wonderful to attract those creatures to him in spirit. I'm hoping to choose perennials that can withstand the winter—if that's realistic. Also, the spot is in partial sun since he was buried under some trees. Any suggestions for suitable plants?

I’m so sorry for your loss! For your cat's grave, I suggest planting flowers that bloom at various times throughout spring and summer. You could use bulbs as well as some ferns in the back for added shade or even some berry bushes. A nice idea is to place a big clay pot up front for cheerful annuals that you can swap out each summer. Also, you might want to think about planting some native wildflowers or a patch of catmint, which is easy to maintain but can spread, so just outline it nicely. A trellis for climbing plants like clematis could also work, and you could add touches like a bird bath or wind chime for charm! What do you think?

Thanks for the helpful tips! I’m in the Midwest, but I’m not too sure on the planting zones.

What a beautiful way to honor your cat! I have an Autumn Sage that I inherited; it’s a hardy perennial that blooms throughout the warmer months and is a hit with butterflies, bees, and even hummingbirds. It's managed well under my pecan tree, and all I do is add some mulch in the winter. It’s a great option if you're in zones 6-9 and comes in lovely colors too.

That sounds lovely! Thank you for sharing a photo; it looks really pretty!

First off, my heart goes out to you during this time. Depending on your zone, which I don’t have the specifics on, a bee balm would be a lovely addition—bees can really get weighed down with pollen from it! If that's too deep for you to dig, cosmos is a great option too; they're beautiful and self-seed! They also attract butterflies and bees.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely look into bee balm. I’m not too knowledgeable about planting zones, though.

Catmint, bee balm, and even some milkweed would be wonderful! Also, cat whiskers could be a great addition—they're known to attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds!

Yes, I’ve heard about cat whiskers! Thanks for reminding me!

Catnip and lavender could be perfect choices! Both are lovely and will bring in those butterflies, too. So sorry for your loss, and I hope planting these flowers brings you some comfort.
