Dropped My Drill in Oil – Should I Replace the Brushes?

Asked By ToolTimeMaster92 On

I accidentally dropped my M18 drill into used motor oil, and since then, the brushes have been sparking when I use it. Is it worth replacing the brushes, or can I continue using it as it is? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Sparking is actually pretty common with brushed motors, especially when they get a bit oily. But since it fell into oil, I’d recommend opening it up and giving everything a good clean with contact cleaner to remove any residue. Better safe than sorry!

Thanks for the tip, I’ll definitely consider cleaning it out!

Yep, a little sparking is normal with brushed motors. The oil may not short it out like water would, but just be aware that it can attract dust and dirt. Keep an eye on it and maybe replace the brushes later if it gets worse!
