I'm feeling overwhelmed because it seems like slugs are destroying everything I plant in my garden within just a few days. For instance, I had 16 sunflower seedlings in a raised bed, and they disappeared in less than two weeks! All my salvia, dahlias, and various other plants from garden centers have also been munched on. The weird part is, I haven't actually seen any slugs yet, so there might be other pests at play. We've also got leatherjackets ruining our lawn and possibly other critters taking a toll on my plants. I really want to get this situation under control so I can enjoy a beautiful garden again! One important thing to note is that we have a dog who loves to munch on everything, so I'm hesitant to use traditional slug pellets unless they're pet-safe. Any advice would be super appreciated!

Since you're worried about using pellets, consider trying physical barriers instead. Copper tape, sharp gravel, or even fleece tunnels can keep slugs away from your plants. Once they get a bit bigger, they're less likely to be damaged by slugs.
You might want to attract some natural predators like birds, hedgehogs, and frogs, as they'll help in keeping the slug population down. Even a small pond can make a difference! Just be cautious because slugs can carry lungworm, which is harmful to hedgehogs, so keep that in mind.
Good point! It's crucial to ensure the solutions we use don't harm the helpful critters.
You know, I had a slug issue last year as well, but I stopped losing plants by using homemade collars made from plant pots, smeared with Vaseline to keep slugs out. Also, planting some 'sacrificial' plants that slugs love, like nasturtiums, can help distract them from your main garden. Companion planting with things they dislike can be effective too!
Interesting tip! I’ve heard that chickens can also help with pest control.

I’ve had luck with sharp gravel too! It creates a great barrier.
