I'm working on a garage bar and I have a drywall beam that I want to make look like a metal foul pole. I'm thinking about painting it yellow, but I'd love to give it a metallic feel as well. Any suggestions on how to achieve this look would be greatly appreciated!

You could try using metallic spray paint from a brand like Rust-Oleum, and then apply yellow paint but rub it off in certain spots to reveal the metallic underneath. Making sure the surface is smooth is key. Alternatively, consider using a metallic peel-and-stick material or wallpaper which could give you a nice finish with less work. If you're feeling adventurous, wrapping the beam in actual sheet metal could also be a simple and effective solution!
If you're after a simple metallic look, sand and prime the beam first, then apply a few layers of hammered metallic spray paint. If you prefer a more distressed or rusted appearance, you can mix some paint with sand to create a rough texture before spraying it. For a peeling paint effect, try applying metal paint to specific areas, cover those with liquid paper, let it dry, and then peel it off—this reveals the metal underneath. There are plenty of techniques you can mix and match to achieve the look you want!
One way to start is by sealing your drywall beam with a hard finish like lacquer or shellac. This will create a good base for applying your faux finish. You might want to look into some cosplay tutorials online about faux metal; they often suggest layering techniques. For example, paint a base metal color, then use a rust color and wipe it off to give that textured look similar to rust. If you finish it with safety yellow, those layers will really pop! Just remember, drywall and latex paint can be tricky together, so make sure to seal it first.
