I'm in the process of building a loft for my kids, and they want a ladder with colorful "rainbow steps." My plan is to paint each step a different color, which sounds super cute. However, I want to keep costs down since I only need a small amount of each paint color.
I was thinking about using craft acrylics, like the kind you can find at Michael's, on some 1 1/4" dowels from Home Depot (not sure what type of wood they are). I'm curious if anyone has tried this and how well it holds up if I cover it with poly. If that doesn't work out, I'd love to hear any other budget-friendly suggestions for making these rainbow steps!

Totally second the sample size idea! Alternatively, you could grab a quart of red, blue, and yellow. That way, you can mix them to get all the other colors you need!
You might want to check out those sample size paints from Home Depot! They can mix them to your colors of choice and usually only cost a few bucks. Plus, you can save any leftovers for future art projects your kids have in mind.

Yep, that’s what we did for a rainbow mural in our kids' room. It was around $30 for a huge mural using Bher Platinum. Really cost-effective!
