What’s the Best Beam Type for an Outdoor Patio Cover Span?

I'm planning to build a freestanding outdoor patio cover to span about 80 feet over my back porch. I previously had an attached patio cover but removed it for this new design, which will be taller and a bit larger. Since I can't mount it to the house, I'm looking for options on wood beams that can cover 25-30 feet without needing too many posts. I'm located in California, so there's no snow load to consider. What would be the best type of beam for this project?

A laminated wood beam could be your solution! Just make sure to consult a professional to ensure everything is safe and meets local regulations. Safety first!

For a span like that, you might want to consider using steel instead of wood. It's significantly stronger over long distances and could help you minimize the number of posts needed.

I'd recommend glulam beams! They're designed for long spans and can handle that kind of distance with strength. Just be sure to check your local building codes to ensure compliance.
