Does Gardening Soil Go Bad if I Leave it Piled Up?

I'm thinking about ordering a truckload of gardening soil for my yard. I'm curious—if I end up with too much and just leave it in a pile, will it go bad over time? I want to know if it will still be usable next year or if it will spoil somehow.

As long as you keep it moist, your soil should be fine. Just check in on it to weed when needed. Covering it with leaves or a loose tarp helps preserve the moisture and keeps air in. Just be cautious in hot weather, especially if you're in a warm area—it can heat up and dry out pretty quickly.

Totally agree! It's all about maintaining that balance to keep it usable.

Soil won't really go bad, but it can definitely grow weeds and become harder to work with over time. I’ve had a pile for a couple years now and it’s still good! I suggest laying a tarp underneath to contain it; old trampoline mats work great for this as they’re super durable and allow for drainage.

No worries at all—it won't go bad on you! Often, the soil you buy has compost mixed in, and letting it sit for another year can actually enhance it. Just keep the surface loose to prevent weeds from taking hold and going to seed.
