Can We Replace Our Dead Hot Water Tank Ourselves?

Asked By CuriousCat123 On

Our hot water tank has completely failed due to corrosion from our well water, causing a leak. I got a quote from the installation company: $790 for new pipes and other work or $2600 for a new tank. They came by again since it started smoking, and now they say the electrical parts are damaged, so I need to buy a new tank for $2600. I'm really upset about this. My husband and I are thinking about tackling the replacement ourselves. Has anyone had experience installing a hot water tank? Any tips or advice?

Replacing a water heater isn't too hard! There's a lot of markup because many people feel pressured to fix it quickly and don't know how to do it themselves. Just keep in mind it can vary depending on whether you have gas or electric. There are tanks that can range anywhere from $500 to $5000 based on the type and efficiency.

You guys totally can do it yourself! The biggest challenge is usually just moving the tanks around. Don’t forget to check out YouTube for some great tutorials; they've got lots of helpful videos on DIY installation.
