I recently had a drywall contractor come in to patch some holes in my old 1960s walls, which have a brush texture but have been painted over multiple times, making them look fairly smooth in places. The contractor added brush texture to the patches, but they appear much rougher than the existing wall surface. I'm wondering how to better blend these patches in. Would sanding them help? Or would a couple of coats of paint make it look better? Any advice would be appreciated!

Sanding those patches could definitely help! You might want to feather the texture out into a larger area to make the transition smoother. Just be careful not to overdo it and end up with more visible marks on the wall.

Do you recommend hand sanding? What grit would you suggest using for that?
