Essential Electrical Tips for Your New Workshop

Hey everyone! I just bought my first home—so exciting! I'm transforming my unfinished basement into a workshop and could really use some advice. Almost all the electrical work needs to be redone since it's not up to code. I've got a blank slate to figure out where to put power outlets, how many breakers I need, and the best spots for lights. What mistakes should I avoid and what tips do you have? I'm in the U.S. by the way. Thanks, and happy woodworking!

When I set up my shop, I installed several outlets every 5 feet along the walls, all above any work surfaces. Color-coding them by circuit really helped too! I even added 220 volt outlets for larger tools and ceiling outlets for easy access to portable tools. This setup has worked perfectly for the last 20 years—no regrets!

Definitely plan for some 220 outlets if you expect to upgrade your tools, especially if you’re moving from benchtop to heavy-duty equipment. I ended up with a dedicated panel for my garage; really helps when you start adding more powerful tools. If you ever get too hot in the basement, consider a mini-split AC unit to keep things comfortable!

You'll definitely want to upgrade to a 200 amp service instead of sticking with 110. Also, raise your outlets off the floor to prevent flooding issues. Consider installing a plug on the ceiling with an extension cord running on a track for added convenience!

I like to keep my outlets around 4 feet high. That way, I don’t have to bend over constantly to plug things in. Plus, none of them get blocked by my workbenches!
