Best Ways to Tackle Weeds in My New Garden?

Asked By GreenThumbGuru42 On

Hey everyone! My partner and I are brand new to gardening and just moved into our first home, which comes with a small garden that's completely overrun with weeds. We're looking for effective ways to tackle this without using harsh chemicals, especially since we have a lot of bees and other pollinators around. Any tips on weed removal methods or safe weed sprays that won't harm our furry friends? Also, we're planning to plant pollinator-friendly flowers in a raised bed, so any suggestions on that front are welcome too. Thanks a bunch!

There are specific weed killers for corn or wheat, but finding one that’s safe for flowering plants is tricky. Honestly, it’s easier to just pull them out. Can’t hurt to get your hands a bit dirty!

That's fair enough then. So I just rip them up?

To really combat weeds, it's best to focus on prevention. A thick layer of mulch can help, and I recommend using natural options like shredded leaves. It not only blocks weeds but also helps with soil temperature and moisture retention. Plus, as the leaves break down, they enrich the soil! And hey, you can pull weeds by hand; after a rain is the best time since the roots will be easier to extract. Avoid those chemicals!

That's good to know! Alright, no weed sprays. Thank you, I appreciate the advice.

I just use a garden hoe for quick weeding. It’s efficient and gets the job done!
